Adding Charm With Vintage Tin Signs

By Arturo Ronzon

Decorating a room always takes a bit of patience and a lot of creativity. One would always go for a certain theme or feel to provide the atmosphere that would suit the room best. If you are looking to adding some unique decorative accents and maybe a hint of charisma to a room, then consider adding tin signs to the overall room design.

Tin signs are commonly found in bars or restaurants all over. Most of these places would have the tin signs hung on the walls or nailed to eating booths. The tin signs come in many shapes and sizes and would often depict cartoon characters, classic advertising campaigns or even the likeness of some famous Hollywood artist.

Getting a hold of these vintage tin signs is much easier that you would think. A lot of antique shops carry a wide selection of classic tin signs. Pay close attention to the price tag though as some collectible tin signs could cost more than the room that you are decorating!

If strolling around looking for an antique store is not to your liking, then there is always the internet. A virtual shopping mall unto itself, the internet has many websites that sell vintage tin items, including tin signs. There are also auction websites that will allow you to bid for rare and collectible tin signs.

People who collect tin signs as a hobby often put up websites of their collections to share with the World Wide Web. Occasionally, some these website owners will agree to sell off part of their collection to serious bidders.

Tin signs not only make great decoration pieces, they also make great conversation pieces as more often than not, a vintage tin sign would evoke some good old memories shared by many. Vintage tin signs of old beer bottles are quite well favored as these designs go very well in recreation rooms.

If you are still wondering why a tin sign would make a great decorative piece, and then study one up close when you get the chance. Pay attention to the amount of crafted detail that goes into making a tin sign and you will get the idea.

Vintage Rusted Tin Signs

They are rusted on the edges through a 3 step process and are individually shrink wrapped keeping them protected. They are vintage replications in every way! Our rusted vintage signs look and feel old! They are even rusty on the corners, edges and back, adding to the realistic vintage appearance. These are specially designed and we are one of the few that carry these particular designs. These signs have a suggested retail price of $24.95

Unfortunately, not all signs are created equal. Some retailers stock tin signs that are created much like a poster from a photograph, whereby the picture is sprayed on with paint. They are NOT rusted or distressed in anyway, although they may tell you that the acquired scratches are there to appear that way. The entire process is much more simplistic and less expensive.

Still others stock lightweight plastic or heavy guage steel where each sign weighs 3-lbs a piece rendering them a non-viable shipping option.

We therefore carry what we do in the way of Vintage Rusted Tin because we simply believe in them!

Our VINTAGE/RUSTED TIN is another high quality process and also costs quite a bit to produce. They are a heavy duty steel that starts out looking like metal, but goes thru an initial process of turning to rust. This gives them the vintage and very distressed appearance of years gone by. The design is then imprinted onto the rusted metal. From there, each is individually shrink wrapped.

Size is 8" x 14" and they weigh just under 1 lb each

Retro Decor and Ideas for Your Home

by Giorgina Devereaux

The term "Retro" refers to old fashioned, or old and functioning like something that is timeless or considered a classic. Retro home style deeply relies on accessories and choosing the right ones to give it a fun and funky look.

For the living room, you can include a black leather sofa with tufted seat tops and legs finished in a brown stain. You can also add a leather chair that features a wrap around back with molded sides with the seat forming from the back though the center and is completely padded. Furniture pieces for the kitchen, for instance, include dinette sets, with an oval red cracked ice table that has chrome insert banding, and chrome chairs upholstered in yellow, red, and cracked ice vinyl. Also, a vintage wooden style table with an enamel top will work perfectly in the kitchen. You can spruce up your furniture and cabinets with glass knobs because they add an authentic vintage look. For cabinets painted in white, you can install the green glass knobs for a nice contrast.

A super way to add appealing charm to your walls is by painting the walls in a cream and green, red and white, or pink and blue color scheme. Also, through the use of wall art, you can enhance the overall look. This is a great way to show off your vintage finds by displaying collectibles on shelves or hanging them on the wall as a group. A tip when hanging art pieces is to keep the center of the artwork at eye level. Furthermore, you might want to consider using vintage tile on the walls or painting in vintage colors to help accentuate other decorative items.

For flooring, you can install linoleum in a checkerboard pattern for a retro feel. Another option is to use throw rugs to add color to the floor, which help tie the elements together.

Lighting helps transform the ambiance in the room. To achieve that authentic retro look, you can buy vintage ceiling lights, vintage desk and table lamps, and wall sconces in plastic or in an enameled metal. You can choose from sputnik lamps, along with other lamps in a variety of colors, which includes yellow, red, and orange, just to name a few.

Decorative accessories are essential to bringing your retro look together. Try to focus on finding items that match your particular color theme. For the kitchen, stainless steel containers and breadboxes are a good choice, as well as patterns, such as cherries, solid pink, and powder blue. Also vintage plates, tablecloths, and dish towels make interesting pieces. If you are having difficulty tying that refrigerator or stove into this look, consider purchasing ones reproduced with today's technology in the original appearance. Other accessories that can be displayed include classic pedal cars inspired from the 1940's and 50's, replica jukeboxes, turntables, radios, Double Bubble clocks, atomic clocks, cocktail clocks, orb clocks, Coke machines, car hop, oil signs, and metal laundry soap bins for a taste of laundry room nostalgia.

Decorative pillows are another fabulous decorative accessory because they add a nice touch to any room. You can purchase pillows that are made in a retro fabric design.

Finally, for window treatments, consider the use of vintage barkcloth that comes in complementary colors and great patterns. This will definitely add drama to your room.
